Critics say talented youngsters could be prevented from following in the footsteps of double gold medallist Rebecca Adlington (pictured) because there is no municipal pool.

bike-ride-3.jpgAn Englefield Green police officer returned this week from a 977 mile John O'Groats to Lands End cycle ride for charity.

PCSO Carole Lawford, along with friend Gemma Stilwell, cycled for 19 days solid after setting off from John O'Groats on Tuesday August 5, and expects the trip to raise more than £1,800 for charity Water Aid, who help provide clean water and wells in Africa.

She said: "It was pretty tough, but I feel remarkably alive after it, if half a stone lighter.

Crackdown on youth gangs

Residents are being asked by police to report gangs of youths hanging round in large groups in the Blays Lane and Hazel Close area of Englefield Green after a number of complaints.

Anyone with concerns should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.

A friend viewing the show house of the Bellway site in the cemetery at Englefield Green overheard the following conversation: Prospective buyer to Sales Person: Are these houses really built on a cemetery?

Village PCSO up for national award

pcso-Cundy.jpgAN Englefield Green police officer who joined the force after a 37-year-long career in banking has been nominated for a national award.

PCSO John Cundy, who became a police officer in 2003, has been nominated for the police community support officer of the year award at the Jane's police review gala awards - an annual awards ceremony for police men and women from across the UK.

Winners will be presented with their awards by home secretary Jacqui Smith at a dinner in London on November 13, which will be hosted by BBC newsreader Hum Edwards.

Englefield Green Village Residents' Association (EGVRA) has produced the 40-page village plan which calls for the post office to reopen, free parking and public toilets.

Villagers were canvassed for views at the last two summer fete's.

Pilot helps GB team win bronze medal

AN Englefield Green pilot has helped win Great Britain win a Bronze medal at the World Helicopter Championships, held in Germany this weekend.

Andrew Taee, who lives in Northcroft Road, flew in the 13th World Championship, held in Eisenach, this weekend with flying partner Squadron leader Mike Leader and, along with five other British pairs, helped the country win a bronze medal.

Andrew, a merchant banker who started flying 20 years ago as a hobby, said: "It's an outstanding achievement - we were up against some of the best flyers in the world.

"The Russians in particular are magical - they are all professional pilots and fly full time."

He added: "We actually very nearly pipped the German's to silver."

Advice offered on the radio this morning made me prick up ears yet another notch!

Bishopsgate School in Bishopsgate Road, Englefield Green, have come up with a plan to tackle school-run congestion.

The primary school want to widen the road access to the school, increase parking spaces from 64 to 110 and create drop off points within the school grounds.

Councillors will consider the plans at the planning committee meeting on Wednesday (27).

A PLAN to build flats in a leafy lane in Englefield Green has been met with anger by neighbours.

An application to extend a block of sheltered accommodation and build another block of affordable homes in Blays Lane has met with opposition from neighbours who say their quiet country lane is being ruined by developments and the traffic that come with them.

Prince Kamanda has submitted the application to extend Elm House - which provides sheltered accommodation for adults- from six one bedroom flats to 12, and to build another eight two bedroom affordable apartments on the land. He proposes to demolish a neighbouring property to make room for the new buildings.
