'What shops?' I hear you ask

Posted by Kevin Barry on Aug 19, 08 09:26 AM in Local Authority

Advice offered on the radio this morning made me prick up ears yet another notch!

Shop locally we were advised. Think of all the benefits you will gain when you do. Leave the car at home and walk to the shops. You save on petrol, get good exercise, and help with our pollution problems. Yes, Yes, I thought, all those birds slain with a tiny stone, good thinking, lets do it!

The penny then dropped with a loud clang. What shops in Englefield Green?

Thanks to myopic development this once thriving and happy village was blessed with the shopping facilities of a small town, has now been reduced to Hamlet status.

A recent survey by residents revealed exactly what we have lost by way of essential shops.

Top of the list is the Post Office and the Bank, followed by Greengrocer, Bakers, Shoe Shop, Grocers, Fishmonger, Fish & Chips, DIY etc, etc. Sadly the modern trend is when useful shops close they
are replaced by non essential units. Consequently we now have five Estate Agents in this village!

May I pose a question? Why is the Planning Committee so called? Cos they don't actually plan anything - planning is done elsewhere.

We'd like to hear from you.
