Book shop is not closing
Graham Dennis owner of Blacklocks Bookshop in Victoria Street, tells me that he was rather amused by the reaction he has received from people asking about the "To Let" sign over his shop.
People keep asking when are you closing? They are relieved, he says, when I explain the notice refers to the flat which is over the shop and definitely not the shop.
Graham went on to say he thought all his visitors were about to congratulate him and his wife on the 20 years he has traded in the village, or on the fact that Blacklocks is now one of the longest established shops in the village.
Interesting note on Graham's family, is that they are one of the oldest in Englefield Green, the earliest trace of them is in 1790.
A land owner (a relation) called Richard Blay, had Blay's Lane named after him, the reason why this name was chosen is not clear, the records also show that Elizabeth Blay married a John Cheeseman in 1794.
Now, that name rings a bell. Cheeseman's Gate, in Windsor Park, is off Wick Road, and Blay's Lane runs into Wick Road!
What happened over 200 years ago, where did this family of 12 (plus servants?) live in this village of not many houses, and certainly not big enough to house this family? - I know that in those days, because of the high infant mortality rate, to have 10 children, was not unusual - But what about the rest of the story?
Were Richard and Elizabeth brother and sister? What about John and Elizabeth how and where did they meet? Where did they live in the village? Is this Surrey's Pride and Prejudice? Please tell me more!
We'd like to hear from you. Send your stories, pics and videos
