Honesty - The Best Policy? Yes, we all agree that's cool!

It was late evening, my visitors had just left so I switched on the box to see the last minutes of the football. It was like magic, the commentator said "If you have just come in and missed the first half of the game, congratulations!" Wow, I said to my friend Gemma (Old English Sheepdog) there speaks a very brave man. She gave me a puzzled look. Well I explained, he has just said this game was rubbish. He should stick to his script of cliches ,and say the football is exciting, the packed crowd are thrilled, they are stunned into silence, roaring their heads off, game of two halves. It might be the coldest, wettest night of the year, the football might be Sunday pub standard, there are no goals, all the pies are gone. Say anything, but don't say congratulations on missing the first half. After the game the atmosphere and the language will be blue. This commentator will be blue. His Boss will be furious, he is paid to praise not to tell the truth. Gemma's confused look was unrelenting, but I understood her unspoken question - You mean he is paid to tell lies? Don't be silly,
I scolded her, these people don't tell lies, they are trained professionals,

it is called being economic with the truth. Sadly I said to my friend, I do not see this poor man being called to higher things like the so-called 'Match of the Day' or the cringing Uriah Heep of a TV show, 'Super Soccer Sunday Special'. Unless this chap promises to pay more attention to the Simple Commentators Book of Cliches, I don't see a future for him in the big time. It might be a very wet, very cold and miserable in the frozen north, and we all might wish that we were home with a glass of electric soup in hand, but we all must still call it the BEAUTIFUL GAME!

We'd like to hear from you.
