Lower speed limit called for by resident

An Englefield Green householder is asking the county council to lower the speed limit of a network of roads in the village.

The resident, who asked not to be named, wrote to the authority this week to ask if the whole area could be a 30mph zone, including Priest Hill, Ridgemead Road, Castle Hill Road, Bishopsgate Road, Crimp Hill and Wick Lane.

He added he has been suggesting reducing the speed from 60mph to the borough and county councils in various letters since 1975, but nothing has been done.

In his latest letter to the county council, he said: "Cars are frequently seen travelling in excess of 60mph along Bishopsgate Road, and Wick Lane between Bishopsgate Road and the Sun pub.

"Savill Court is sometimes used as a venue for car launches. The local roads are then used as a 'test track' with a succession of 'round the block' drives, with the inevitable speeding.

"At the very least I suggest that all highways edging and passing through the Common land at Englefield Green should be 30mph."

Surrey County Council was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
