A Man For All Seasons?
My first thoughts on President-elect Barack Obama when he appeared on TV, was that he has something of the style of the late President Jack Kennedy, something that made him seem different.
It's a feeling you get when you recognise new talent on the sports field, the Theatre or TV. You know instantly that this person is special.
Observing him during his campaign, this talent was very evident. It is fascinating how this relatively unknown man of mixed race, who has flown in the face of accepted convention, and won the day.
Candidates for high office in that country usually are well connected, very wealthy and move in the right circles. Candidates for this top job are usually straight from Central Casting.
On election night, instead of the tired croaking battle-weary voice of too many speeches, this man sounded fresh, as though this was day one of the fight to save the world.
His campaign message was - It is time for change! His agenda was far reaching and ambitious, but, he warned us, I cannot do it on my own, with your help, we can do it.
When his supporters began to chant "Yes we can"- To me it sounded like Bob the Builder, but they were very serious and meant every word! I hope this man was the author of this rousing speech, and it was not the product of the grey suits. The message I heard, was of sincerity. The task he has inherited is immense. Yet he seems not the slightest bit fazed, he oozed authority.
Thank you, he tells the electorate of America, for giving me the chance to help my country. Barack Obama has persuaded a record number of his fellow citizens to place him in the position as he says, to make changes!
In the USA it is accepted that the honeymoon period after the Presidential election is 100 days. After that short period it will be interesting to see if his dreams for the future and those of the electorate are still in accord!
We'd like to hear from you. Send your stories, pics and videos
