Village plan goes to council
A residents group has compiled a detailed study on the present state of Englefield Green and how villagers would like to see it develop in future.
Englefield Green Village Residents Association (EGVRA) has handed its document to Runnymede Council and hopes to work closely with the local authority to achieve its objectives.
Concerns expressed by residents include a lack of a Post Office, loss of the Day Centre, poor street lighting and pavements, alterations to ease traffic congestion, and improved parking facilities.
The report handed to Council Leader Cllr John Furey is a thorough look into the village and its Victorian heritage, says a Runnymede spokeswoman.
It acknowledges that the proximity of Royal Holloway University of London has caused problems over accommodation and parking, but celebrates the co-operation of the student body in its support for community projects, she said.
EGVRA chairman Alan Fone said: "The Residents' Association has put a lot of effort into formulating their plans to secure the best for the village when so much change is happening in the area.
"We believe that working with our local councillors we can ensure that the village benefits from funding associated with significant building developments."
Cllr Patrick Roberts, who chairs Runnymede's economic development committee, said: "The most successful development of Englefield Green depends upon a wide range of policy considerations, carried out in the best interests of the general public and the village area.
"The Village Plan is under the Resident Association's banner and produced with a significant amount of input from all the Englefield Green Councillors and is something that we all share for the benefit of this community."
Mrs Joyce Taylor, vice chairman of EGVRA, added "Our thanks go to the many residents, councillors and committee members for their contributions to this plan. We have thought long and hard about how to capture the vital elements of Englefield Green."
A Public Meeting will be held at 10.30am on Saturday 29 November in the Village Centre (Methodist Church Hall) Victoria Street, Englefield Green, Surrey TW20 0QX, to give residents a final opportunity to discuss the Village Plan.
