Students host Christmas party for pensioners
Students from Royal Holloway took time out of their busy schedules to host a Christmas party elderly people in Englefield Green on Saturday(13).
A group of 23 pensioners from the Aldwyn Place residential housing enjoyed a festive raffle, bingo and musical entertainment in the Founder's Building at Royal Holloway.
The community action volunteering team from the university arranged with Runnymede Borough Council for community minibuses to assist in transporting the guests to and from their residence for the event.
The Englefield Green Village Residents Association (EGVRA) approached the group of volunteers in the summer, asking them to fill the gap left by the closure in November 2007 of the Queen Elizabeth House day centre - where Christmas lunches were previously held.
EGVRA contributed ã500 to help fund the event and a team of about 10 students and staff volunteers from Royal Holloway organised the occasion, with German and management student Beckie Wingrove leading the team.
Community action volunteer coordinator, Phil Simcock, said: "This is the first time this event has been held at the College and we hope it will become an annual activity for volunteers to give elders from Englefield Green a special Christmas treat."
