Englefield Green pupils live life as Romans

Posted by Russell Butt on Mar 5, 09 05:06 PM in Schools/colleges

How to build a straight road was on the curriculum for students at St Jude's School in Englefield Green when they spent a day learning about the Romans.

All the year 3 children and staff of the school joined in the fun last month by dressing in traditional Roman attire, shields and helmets included.

In the morning the children learned about day to day life in the Roman Empire, including finding out about the slave trade and even how the Romans went to the toilet.

After lunch the wannabe legionnaires learned about the Roman army and were tested for their Latin skills. At the end of the day there was a small demonstration of the weapons the Roman army would have used on the field including bow and arrows and spears.

Organising teacher, Erica Carmichael, said: "The children learned so much and I am sure the memory of the day will last a long, long time."

We'd like to hear from you.
