Prime Minister, you asked my thoughts on your Government's latest plans.....
...Well, your promises to clean up Politics, fix the Economy, Public Services, and all the other current problems, reminds me of an old saying about politicians - Their promises are like pie crust, made to be broken. Two local issues, the loss of our village Post Office and the permission for the Third Runway at Heathrow, are typical examples of broken promises. You repeated the promise that Post Offices' are an essential resource to the community - they are safe under this Government! Yet many letters and a petition signed by hundred of residents failed to save our Post Office. Transport Minister, Ruth Kelly and yourself, promised that if the majority of residents did not want the extra runway at LHR then it would be cancelled. What a laugh! Another problem - Due to budget cuts by HMG, we in Surrey are about to lose 50 Police Officers. A cynic would say that leafy Surrey will always return a Tory MP so this is the price they will have to pay.
In the recent past our country has suffered from the effects of tired and stale Governments (like this one) hanging by their fingertips till the time is right, for the mood to change, etc.
I would suggest that a sensible change for this country, would be to have a fixed term
parliaments of 5 years. Then hold elections. I realise chances of getting that type of legislation on the statute book are zero.
The idea of turkeys voting for Christmas will not be welcomed by turkeys, too busy feathering their own nests. Governments knowing that they are on a fixed term, would forget about back burners, and delaying tactics. All legislation would be carefully prepared and carefully presented. Get it right first time or we are out!. So there you are Prime Minister, you asked what I thought - now its over to you -Please tell me why my idea of letting the voter have a tiny bit of a finger in the pie, will not be good for democracy?
