Time for urgent changes? Well - Yes, but not yet!
We were given to understand, that MP's who missed the opportunity of 'putting things right'
(give the money back) would not be allowed to stand at the next election. All those who bent the rules and indulged in a bit of cheating (Because I am worth it) were to be put out to grass. We were not told that this rule only applied to OTT cases. This is typical Westminster logic, based on the Harold Wilson rule "A week, is a long time in Politics" - meaning, do not worry too much about today's problems, in a few days there will be other distractions. How very true, the BBC and their quaint ways with our money are now in the news taking the heat off MP's. What a Mad Hatters Tea Party! A speaker in the House asked the question - What will the rest of the world think of us - for years we have been the envy of the democratic world, setting the standard for all to follow. What will they think of us now?
The answer to that question is very simple........
By their own hand MP's have ruined their reputation. The whole world will now watch to see
what steps are taken to regain the respect for the Mother of Parliaments, enjoyed only a short time ago. Now is not the time for the usual manifesto type promises from members, now is the time for MP's to get out of the cosy Westminister Village and enter the real world.
Time for real and fixed terms and conditions of employment that are agreeable to all. The situation that empowers MP's to arrange pay, rations, mortgages, expenses, work load, holidays, etc is far too weak, and as we have seen, is abused to the hilt by too many.
Time for change? Yes! But will those responsible want to make any changes? It will be interesting to see who will say, I am too embarrassed by this Del Boy dealing, I suggest we now regain the respect of those who sent us here to help them, not ourselves.
