What a sad state of affairs we have arrived at when the question under discussion is about cheating. Should the goal that was scored, thanks to Thierry Henry's hand ball, be allowed to stand? In other words, is it OK now to cheat and get away with it? Well ,say the authorities, it is not as simple as that. As the match officials did not see any infringement, they cannot change what happened. What, even if the TV pictures show that Henry - quite clearly and deliberately - prevents the ball from going into touch with his hand? Well, as the officials did not see a problem at the time, the result will stand....This farce brings to my mind an exchange between a young man and another which is encapsulated in the limerick of Ronald Knox which was on the lines of -
There was a young man who said "God Must find it exceedingly odd, To think that the tree
Should continue to be, When there's no one about in the quad."
Las Vegas partying comes to the village with special Christmas party nights at the Savill Court Hotel beginning on Thursday, December 3.
Large or small groups can make up a table at a Las Vegas themed 'join a party night'.
The Great Hall will be transformed into a Las Vegas show venue with showgirls, Hollywood style cocktails and live entertainment from 'Rat Pack' impersonators, plus casino fun.
More top comedians will have the village in hysterics as Comedy in the Green returns to the Social Hall on Harvest Road on November 24.
Andrew Bird and Tony Cowards will be joined by compere Pete Jonas for the usual evening of smart gags and wisecracks headlined by TV star Rufus Hound.
As always there will be a bar and the show will contain adult themes and ripe language. Doors open at 7.45pm.

Concern for a missing person prompted a massive police search in Englefield Green tonight (November 17).
Nineteen police cars, four police vans - including a specialist search and rescue unit, two dog handling units and two police helicopters were called in to aid with the search of woodland around the village green for an Ascot man in his mid-fifties police say had been missing since Monday afternoon.
A large police presence is mobilised in Englefield Green tonight searching for a man in his 50s said to be a "danger to himself".
Police will not say at this time who they are searching for but a senior officer from the Thames Valley force told the Staines News that local residents should not fear for their safety.
The owners of a restored listing building have applied to Runnymede planners to install a chimney.
Mrs B Slipper has submitted the application for a chimney, lining of the exising flue and installation of a wood burning store at the Coach House.

Hundreds of poppy-wearers observed two-minutes silence at one of the most picturesque memorials in the county for Remembrance Day today (Sunday, November 8).
At 11am, more than two hundred people made no peep as Reveille piped out and filled the grounds of the Royal Air Forces Memorial on Cooper's Hill, Englefield Green, where the names of 20,000 service men who lost their lives fighting for their country are etched on its walls.
An artist will help children create their own Christmas cards in a special workshop at the Savill Garden.
Kerry Lemon will be hosting special creative workshops in The Gallery of the Savill Building on December 5, 12 and 19 where children can create their own 3ft high Christmas trees or even a reindeer hobby horse.
Cost for each workshop is £20 for one adult and up to two children. To book call 01784 435544, spaces are limited.
Father Christmas will be visiting the Savill Garden as part of various activities planned for the festive season.
