Breaking news: Police launch huge search for missing man
A large police presence is mobilised in Englefield Green tonight searching for a man in his 50s said to be a "danger to himself".
Police will not say at this time who they are searching for but a senior officer from the Thames Valley force told the Staines News that local residents should not fear for their safety.
Sergeant Matthew Lloyd said: "I'd like to emphasise there is nothing sinister going on. There's no danger to anyone, we are just concerned for this man's welfare."
Residents said they first became aware of the police presence when a helicopter from Thames Valley Police began circling the area of the village green at around 4.30pm. It left the scene a while later and the search was taken up by the Surrey Police helicopter until around 7.20pm.
Our reporter counted between 15 and 20 police cars and vans in the area close to the cricket pavillion, and also observed two police dog handling units. Members of Surrey Police, Thames Valley Police and the Royal Lodge were at the scene tonight.
It is understood that the missing man had been regarded as a medium risk to himself yesterday before he disappeared, and his status was upgraded to high risk today.
