Help! This is Common Sense on the Loose!
In an article, published this weekend, (The Sunday Times) local communities secretary Eric Pickles called on council "Fat Cats" to double their work load and to reduce their pay.
This no-nonsense northerner then added a stunning claim that he had not been able to determine exactly what local authority chief executives did. "I have not satisfactorily been able to answer how they fill their day"
What a fascinating discussion point! I wonder how many CEOs asked their personal assistance to get their Job Description from files, so that we could check exactly what we do? This man Pickles is suggesting that we explore the possibility of merging some services and managers!
Wow, this is good stuff, this is common sense on the loose! What other ideas are on offer? Well, he wants to reverse the worst house building slump since 1924. He has in mind a brilliant but complicated scheme which will require like minded thinkers to accomplish.
Given his thoughts on local authorities GEO's, his chances of any success are very slim, especially as he believes large sums could be saved, by cutting their ludicrous pay packets.
All this reminiscent of the BBC's "Yes Minister" civil servant Humphrey was far too cleaver for all the politicians. I wonder what will happen in real life?
